'Esperanza' means 'Hope' Monte Pirata elev. 936 feet. The tallest point in Vieques, this peak is where the pirate lookouts would search the seas for ships to prey on and fleets to run from. ( Seen in the background). The Esperanza Waterfront is on the South Coast. The tiny 'town' is the Tourist Center with shops and restaurants. There are places to stay across the street, but the good beaches are still some distance away. It is advisable to rent a jeep to truly enjoy the variety of beautiful beaches in Vieques, however 'one nighters' and those who for some reason will not be renting a jeep would be happiest in Esperanza, where you can walk to beaches and restaurants.
