takes 10, very scenic, minutes. 3.
Be met by a private Taxi at the San Juan Airport and be
driven to the Fajardo Ferry terminal or the Fajardo airport. $65.
for 3 persons before 6 PM. Ten dollars additional for pickups
after 6PM. $15. per person for 4 or more people. ** Please note
the fares charged by 'non pre-reserved taxis from the taxi stand
at the airport would be considerably more. • Mary is a lovely lady and very reliable. She doesn't speak
much English but her husband does (he drives the taxi) Tel. 787-863-8224
and ask for him. Her cell is 787-649-9155 if you need it, but
be patient with her English. They charge $65. for the ride from
San Juan to Fajardo. $10. extra after 6 PM. ($15. per person for
more than 3 people).

The above drivers are 'tentatively' on this
page because I am concerned about people making reservations and
not bothering to cancel, if they can't make it. Please be respectful
of the fact that they both need to drive for more than an hour
from Fajardo to pick you up, please make sure you cancel with
adequate notification.
4. Rent a car at the San Juan Airport and leave it in Fajardo.
Several Car Rentals allow this and they will drive you to the
ferry terminal/airport or pick you up there. If you keep the car
for 3 days or more some car rentals allow free drop off in Fajardo
(or vice-versa). See Elenas' Adventure Travel
Guide to Puerto Rico for more information about the El Yunque
rain forest. There are a few new car rental agencies that will
also do this. Avis will do this as well.

If you plan to go from the airport to the ferry terminal in Fajardo
on the same day, take a taxi! (pre arranged - see above).

Night
in Fajardo. If your flight arrives in San Juan too late to
get the 8 PM ferry to Vieques or 7 pm Culebra (weekdays and 6 PM
weekends and now the 8 PM ferry on weekdays to Vieques) then it
might suit you to spend the night in nearby Luquilo, on the beach. There is a lot to
see in this area. The El Yunque rainforest, Luquillo Beach,
sailing to Icacos Key. The nicest place to stay in a reasonable new hotel on the beach is the Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn. Please
note that there is a hotel right in the International airport
in San Juan which could be a very convenient place to stay the
night, recently refurbished. see above for more info.
*** If you want to visit the Vieques biobay and return to Fajardo on the same day you can NOT do this by ferry.
Vieques Ferries:
Schedule Ticket office opens one hour before ferry departure.
They request that you be at the terminal one hour before
departure, as the mess there is difficult to deal with.

falls on a Monday or Friday the weekend
schedule is observed; if the holiday falls on a
mid-week day the regular mid-week schedule will
be observed. ** the same applies to Culebra

. The Cargo ferries run several times a day DO NOT* plan on taking a rental car to Vieques! You need a prior reservation to take a car on the ferry.
At best, this is iffy. You can be bumped off for little reason,
then your holiday plans may be ruined or you may miss you flight
back home. This happens a lot.*
* It is infinitely more advisable to rent a jeep/SUV
once you are on Vieques. You need a jeep for the beautiful beaches,
not a car. Do NOT rent a regular car in Vieques, as they will ask you not to go to the beaches in it!!! ( rough dirt roads). Cargo

to Vieques.

Ferries between Vieques and Culebra

I have been asked by travelers to warn that: "Very
often, on a weekend, you simply cannot get a ticket
to Culebra. Reserve by phone in advance! ( very hard to do as they rarely answer the phone.) Some people camp out overnight in front
of the ticket window in order to get tickets, and you
don't stand a chance. So if this is your schedule (
to go to Culebra on a summer week-end) you might want
to consider flying (with previous reservations). There
is an airport in Fajardo and the fare is $23. one way. |
